Today, March 1, 2024, my dreams came true as I addressed a group of more than 120 postgraduate students at Lead City University (LCU), my host institution during Phase II of my Fulbright Specialist grant, The Arts and Generative Leadership.  Dr. Omolara Campbell, LCU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Tina Akinbo, Head of Department Management & Accounting and Dr. Esther Aderinto, Director of Entrepreneur Center, orchestrated my 90-minute workshop presentation, The Critical Incident Technique. (CIT).  A qualitative research methodology in use for more than 70 years, CIT was originally developed by Flanagan to test the readiness and performance of U.S. aviators during World War II.  Flanagan developed a 5-item questionnaire called the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) to observe and interpret human behavior. Since its public launch in 1954, scholars and practitioners have used CIT to study aviation, education, business and nursing to name a few.  I presented a Case Study detailing my use of CIT to conduct research. I also presented some of my research findings thereby showing the pratical application of the method.

I took the opportunity to share a case study drawn from my research to demonstrate how the CIT methodology can be used to understand human behavior.  Using a hands-on approach, I encouraged participants to complete and submit their own CIQ.; we then reviewed the preliminary feedback. During the course of the workshop, we covered, inter alia, epistemology, ontology, qualitative research, quantitative research, the Institutional Review Board, Ethics, Minimal Risk, Inductive Research and Epistemic Exclusion.
